The work continues!!!  We have submitted 3 grants for the 2009-10 Rotary year and 2 have already been approved!

The first grant was for BioSand Filters (BSF).  The grant will provide the mold to produce the filters, training on how to make them, and all the material to produce 200 BSF's.  The additional benefit will be a vocation for the village.

The second grant approved was for rain water harvesting.  It will pay for a press and molds to make bricks to construct the tanks, plus all the guttering to provide the run-off from the the school buildings.  The brick production will create vocational opportunities for the village.
This grant also includes 100 solar lights for the village.

The third grant, still awaiting approval, is for agricultural and sanitary needs.  It will send villagers to a farming school in Kampala to teach advanced farming techniques.  It will also provide 200 bee hives for the village, orange tree seedlings and various seeds for new crops.

The sanitary portion of this grant will provide 300 sanitary platforms to cover pit latrines.

Ontario Airport at 5:00 am for a 6:45 flight to Houston.  From Houston, it is a 9 hour 40 minute flight to Amsterdam, where I met up with Venessa Contopulos, the Peace Scholar from our District.  After a 2 hour wait, it is a 8 hour flight to Entebbe, Uganda, where it is now Tuesday night.  DGE Rich and Sue Dell'Acqua came in a little later from Brussels.  Our hosts picked us up and off to bed!

June Trip

District 5330 is gearing up for another trip to Oduoro-Kanapa Village in Uganda.

Five Rotarians (including the author) and the District 5330 World Peace Scholar will travel in early June to work on some more grants, deliver $500 worth of trees, and deliver 20 ukuleles for the children.

The ukuleles are the idea of our Peace Scholar Vanessa.  She was involved in music therapy with the 'Invisible Children', and thought the children of our village might like some musical instruments that are easy to play.

I will post to this blog when computer time is available on the trip.
